Resque

Now we're talking. For the first of this month's posts we have those excitable Reading based scamps Resque. Previously known to one and all as International Resque, the band dropped the first word sometime prior to this little offering: Resque - She Drives My Train.

There must be something in the water in Berkshire. Reading and Oxford seem to feature heavily in any list of indie pop home towns.

Resque toured extensively with Carter USM, which of course is where I was first introduced to them (specifically at a gig at Huddersfield Poly in probably 1991. It was in the Great Hall mind - ask your dads kids!); and it only took the first 30 seconds of this to remind me of their lovely jingly-jangly Beatlesesque pop offerings.

And of course, in 1993 or so after the band split, Wez, the Resque drummer was latterly recruited to the by-then slightly past it Carter to bolster the duo into a 'proper' band. It wasn't his fault...

There's a nice little fan site here for more information, but there's not much to be found about the band around the internet so I'm a bit at a loss I'm afraid. All stories welcome!

  1. I know this isn't Rescue related but...

Worry Bomb, first album with Wez, is great if you haven't heard it. Do like this track though, heard of them years ago but not actually listened to them.

Oh and keep up the good work.

  2. It sounds an awful lot like the Primitives.

  3. My gf, (now wife!) put them on at Brunel university in Uxbridge. I remember the album being a bit samey, but OK in an indie Monkee's style.

  4. My cousin (lived in the UK for a while, married a guy from there, moved back to the states, divorced him) wants a mix CD with a track list containing bands I had heretofore never heard of. The internet hath provided for most of them -- amazon had quite a few, the russians had some of the rest, YouTube (I pulled the audio off) had one, and this morning I had two holdouts. One was "She Drives My Train" (thank you!) and the other is "Australia" by The Men They Couldn't Hang. I'm still looking for that one.

  5. I have been trying to track down "My Big Ambition" - definitely one of my favourite songs from those heady days. I might regret saying that if I hear it again though...

  6. I bought Life's a Bonus the other day for a friend of mine who introduced me to them back in the day. I was lucky enough to be living in Berkshire at the time and we got to see quite a few really good indie bands particularly in places like the Old Trout in Windsor.

I had the album on repeat in 1992 and never heard of them again. Playing it the other day, it actually stills sounds good and not too trite either.

I once saw a bloke many years later in Camden wearing a Resque t-shirt. Now, if I could track one of those down, I'd be a very happy man.

  7. I was in a band that supported Resque in 1991-ish at The Pop Club / Bull and Gate in Kentish Town. I thought they sounded really good and actually bought their single that night.
